Opening Chapter
January 2009 felt like a new clock starting. The Mall was full of people in scarves and thick coats, some holding tiny flags, some holding homemade signs with the word hope written in a dozen styles. The air was thin and cold enough to make your breath visible, and it felt like the country was exhaling as one person.
We had just lived through a year that broke the old script. The 2008 campaign had been a referendum on exhaustion and risk. The financial crisis had rolled over the country like a storm that did not care about party lines. Bailouts for banks sat next to foreclosure notices on kitchen tables. Iraq was still bleeding, Afghanistan was getting worse, and the word recession stopped sounding like a technical term and started sounding like a personal threat.
