# Chapter I — Night Whistle at Applegate Tower
The night the whistle screamed from Applegate Tower was one of those cool autumn evenings that make street lamps look like watchful sentinels. Frank and I had just turned from the main thoroughfare into the narrow lane that led to the old square when Hurd Applegate's voice reached us—harsh, querulous, a man roused from sleep and pride.
"Frank! Joe! Thank Goodness you're here!" he cried, stepping into the pool of light beneath the tower. The great brick shaft rose above us, its stone cornices outlined against a clouded moon. The clock faces were dark, though one minute earlier their slow hands had been proclaiming nine. Now something more sinister than an ordinary stoppage had brought us: the whistle, heard all over town, and a theft from the clock room.
