# When the Rial Falls: Voices of the Iranian Uprising
**Tehran, December 28, 2025**
The rial has collapsed. At 1.45 million to the dollar, a merchant who sold a television yesterday cannot afford to buy a new one today. The Grand Bazaar falls silent—not from peace, but from rage. For the first time since 1979, the merchants who built this regime are closing their shops in protest.
But this story did not begin today. It began in 1953, when foreign powers stole Iran's democracy. It continued through SAVAK's torture chambers, through the false promise of revolution, through forty-five years of theocratic rule. It accelerated in September 2022, when Mahsa Amini died in custody and women burned their hijabs in the streets.
Now, history reaches its breaking point.
