"A scandal, a ledger, and a choice of futures at a country estate"
Opening Chapter
The last mile to Greywood Hall makes a persuasive argument for fortune as a moral quality. The hedges are trimmed into obedience; the oaks are placed with a painter's restraint. Gravel announces the carriage wheels with the confidence of money, a sound which seems to reassure the house before the house has to speak for itself.
Your aunt sits opposite with her reticule anchored on her knee, her posture so exact that it might have been measured. Mrs. Mercer has not been poor, precisely, but she has been made uncomfortable by other people's misjudgments. She has chosen to take those lessons as a curriculum.
"Remember," she says, softly, for your ear alone, "the Greywoods are careful people. Their name has a history. If we are to be safe, we must be... prudent."
Prudent. It is another word for clever in her mouth, and it has the same edges.
